The pandemic has given rise to new grocery shopping trends, especially functional foods. Consumers started to look into more immunity-boosting foods and substances that can address mental issues. Nearly one-quarter of global consumers consume functional foods that deliver a relaxing or calming effect to the body, thus relying on food as medicine. Previous trends such as CBD and turmeric overpromised on delivery, which is why sustainability, practicality, and transparency are becoming more important.

Other trends include purchasing in bulk, from private labels, less luxury items, and cooking from scratch, all in favor of the cost-value relationship. “Shortcuts” such as marinades, sauces, and prepped ingredients are becoming popular as they save time and introduce consumers to new cuisines. Lasly, consumers' decisions are influenced by the sustainability and ethicality of foods.
